The Owner of Paul’s Tree Service, Paul Guzenski approached EBO with the idea of starting a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a vision to help strengthen our community by planting trees and supporting families experiencing breast cancer. This vision was turned into a reality in June 2020 and Spruce Up Anchorage was born. EBO worked with the Founder, Paul, to facilitate the incorporation of the organization and create foundational systems and materials for ongoing management purposes.

Through a strong existing relationship with the Founder and EBO’s own sincere support of Spruce Up Anchorage’s mission, this nonprofit startup has steadily grown into an organization that is making a small yet powerful impact across the community. Community engagement is a central component of Spruce Up Anchorage and in addition to tree planting and education, Paul knows it is time to do more to support individuals and families experiencing breast cancer. The creation of Spruce Up Anchorage serves as a wonderful legacy to Betsy Guzenski, Paul’s late mother who passed away from breast cancer in 2019.

Outcomes That Matter
Since the organization’s inception, there has been significant interest in their annual spruce tree giveaway, which serves to spread awareness and encourage more trees to be planted across Anchorage. With the help of local resources and relationships, Spruce Up Anchorage has been honored to provide caring gifts to an individual experiencing breast cancer. This support has ensured their safe transportation for critical medical care and helped with rental costs and basic necessities. The ability to support even one person in our community is central to Spruce Up Anchorage’s mission: “...to help bring light, compassion, and financial help to women, people, and families who find themselves in the clutches of a life changing breast cancer diagnosis.”
